About

I'm a new mother living in upstate NY with a background in material science and an interest in natural beauty products. I'd like to help bring awareness around safety and effectiveness of cosmetic ingredients and become a more educated and discerning consumer.

One of the first signs of my pregnancy was my heightened sense of smell. Why do the senses become so sharp when there's a new life forming inside me? Could it be that my body is trying to protect me and my son by activating sensory warning signals against harmful substances? I started paying more attention to the ingredient labels of my cosmetic products, parabens, sodium lauryl sulfates, DEA... the list goes on and on. What are these chemicals for anyway? And if pregnant women and newborns shouldn't be exposed to these potentially harmful substances, why should anyone be?

Our skin is the largest organ in the body and has incredible ability to protect us against the environment. While lotions and cleaning products are designed to be absorbed by the skin to nourish it with nutrients, the same products contain ingredients such as preservatives and fillers that can cause allergic reactions, irritation, and potentially even cancer!

It's time to get back to basics and focus on what we really need to keep our skin healthy and lose the over-priced, over-hyped, potentially toxic cosmetic products that promise a fountain of youth. Future posts will explore healthy, natural solutions that are affordable and effective. Read on and looking forward to hearing your opinions and discoveries as well!
