Founded in 2007 by Dara O'Rourke, a professor of environmental and labor policy at the University of California at Berkeley, "The Good Guide" is a for profit organization funded by venture capitalists. Its goal is to provide authoritative information about the health, environmental and social performance of products and companies. The company earns money through affiliated e-commerce sites and selling information products.


PETA: People for Ethical Treatment of Animals's Beauty and Personal Care Section
PETA touches every aspect of love for animals, including not using them to test cosmetic ingredients. The beauty and personal care section has interesting articles on natural concoctions. Also it hosts a useful search engine for for Cruelty-Free companies and products.

Skin Deep Cosmetic Database
Skin Deep is a safety guide to cosmetics and personal care products brought to you by researchers at the non-profit organization: The Environmental Working Group. You can search by ingredient and learn about its purpose and possible toxicity. Each product is given a rating on a scale from 0 to 10, with 0 being least toxic. It's also useful for searching by product category or by brand.

Household Products Database 
Sponsored by the US Department of Health and Human Services, this site offers safety information on household cleaners, insect repellents, lawn care products, and more. You can find the ingredients of each product and safety details given by the manufacturer. There is also information on product recalls.
